NOVEMBER 2009 - ISG welcomes Karishma Budhev Lama to the ISG team
Ms. Karishma Budhdev Lama has lived in the Middle East region for the past 9 years. She has solid experience in the fields of conflict assessment, conflict transformation strategies and methodologies, facilitation and organizational development. Since 2002 she has led or assisted the design, management and analysis of long term peace-building programmes and provided on-going technical support to local communities in the Middle East and North Africa region. Prior to joining ISG, Ms. Lama worked for Relief International (RI) in Amman, Jordan, where she developed, managed and led holistic programming targeting Jordanians and refugees in Jordan, of all ages. Specifically she was engaged with:
- designing and implementing projects and/or contracts
- developing and managing thematic program areas
- mentoring and leading local teams and consultants
- developing and managing local and international partnerships and contractual agreements (including networking, writing reports, donor communication and organizational representation)
- developing and leading budget management
As Research and Development Director for Relief International's emergency programs, Ms. Lama identified opportunities to improve program quality and impact and worked to resolve systemic program issues. She has developed mechanisms for best practice development and sharing, prepared staff development initiatives and facilitated program linkages and cross program learning. As Program Officer with the Middle East International Affairs Program at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Ms. Lama managed creative dialogue and action projects conducted with local and international NGOs. She facilitated trainings in conflict analysis and intervention and established two regional NGO networks consisting of 30 local community based organizations, representing the Middle East and Africa regions. She also managed the first initiative in the region which compiled data on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the use of children in armed conflict. The study focused on young people’s experiences in Gaza, West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Sudan. In addition, she developed regional analysis on demand side approach to small arms and light weapons control in local communities Ms. Lama is currently undertaking a distance learning course on Research and Evaluation provided by the Human Rights Education Associates. She has a Graduateship in Conflict Management. She also possesses a Dual Honor Bachelor of Arts in International Politics and Marketing and a Certificate in Peace and Reconciliation Studies.
